Hood gas cylinders

You don't have to replace the cylinders to get the hatch to stay open. For
about $9 you can buy a Lift Lock. The one I have is made by Pylon, the
wiper
blade people. Bought it a local Murrays Auto Parts store. It attaches to
the end of the bottom of one sides cylinder rod and is basically a spring
loaded brace that locks the cylinder fully extended. To drop the hatch you
release the brace with your finger. They will hold the hatch open when it's
snow covered.

You can order one here for $5.95.

Apparently they work great for hatchbacks, too.
