one tough I-5 (rod knock issue- funny!)

Greetings Audinauts!

This week we dived under my roommate's recently purchased $300 '84 CGT to i=
nspect the awful noise coming from within the motor. It was billed as havin=
g a rod knock, and the seller wasn't kidding. Had fun getting the (bent) pa=
n off, and the bent oil pickup tube gave a clue as to why the bearings got =
unhappy...

Just how unhappy was made clear when I grabbed #1 rod. 1/4 inch play side t=
o side (OUCH!)
Then pull off the bearing cap.
*NO bearing material at all*.
Tough motors... we drove that one gingerly across town, with the intent of =
either turbo swapping the beast, or using it as a parts car for his '86. Ho=
w many other engines can run without throwing a bearingless rod?

Impressed by the ability of these motors to take abuse,
