1994 S4 here.
Same thing happens to me and just did the t-stat for
elimination purposes.  Upon brainstorming with a
fellow audiot, he hinted that it may be the water temp
sender?  Anyone BTDT?
Yeah, this bugs me, also, please be an easier (read:
cheaper) fix than my recently bent control arm on the
left front.  (ouch.)
