Indeed. Moreover, to confuse things even further, there are multiple
generations of MB 4-Matic as well. As I understand it, the current
4-Matic as found on the M-class (and probably on the other Merciless Benzes
cars too) uses EDL all around (i.e., open diffs everywhere, and relies only
on ABS to brake spinning wheels). Audi's quattro IV (on all current models
except the TT and A3/S3) uses EDL only from side to side. The front-rear
split is via a Torsen diff. I would think that the Audi system is going
to be more capable as a result.
