That *is* the check engine light. It's not a pic of a cat converter.
It's a pic of an engine with a lightning bolt through it.

The only way to figure out what the fault is is to connect a VAG scan
tool to the diagnostic port and read the DTCs (diagnostic trouble code).
The dealer could do it, or you could find someone who has VAG-COM
( http://www.ross-tech.com ) installed on a laptop computer, and the
proper interface cable to do the same. Once you have the fault
code, then it should be fairly clear why the check engine light came
on and what's needed to correct the fault.
