Tim, not sure about the price, but I can say that this is a _very_common failure on the 2.7tt cars, nothing he did wrong, just poor engineering.
A friend of mine has a 2001 S4tt, ironically its had both turbos replaced, the tranny replaced, the motor had to be pulled for some oil leak, brake problems and a slew of under-warranty repair work, all in 30k miles. He doesn't drive the car terribly hard, hasn't abused it, the car has been at the dealer for over 2 months of the 2 years he's owned it. This is a common story too, he's not the only one, makes you wonder what Audi is doing over there sometimes.
