road grime all over headlights

Last night I ran into another 200TQA driver, and he showed me his Euro
headlights. Nice! But he was just back from somewhere-or-other and
the lights were completely coated in road grime. I know that the A8
and numerous other cars have washer/wipers on their headlights, but
these have at least 2 problems:
* One more piece of stuff to install and maintain (even if I could
make 'em fit my 200)
* Only cleans low beams
* Obviously aftermarket and therefore may attract attention??
My telemark ski bindings have a clear-ish teflon tape applied over
them to prevent snow buildup. The tape isn't clear enough for optical
applications, but it is awfully slippery. But it got me wondering if
there is some very slippery coating one could apply to headlights
(remember Rain-X? Not quite what I need, but perhaps something
similar) that would make road grime less likely to stick. The teflon
paste I use in my bathroom is white, but here are some other ideas.
Has anyone tried them? Any guesses on how effective/risky they'd be?
* Butter: good enough for pancakes, good enough for road grime!
* Spray-on teflon (or other) lubricant. WD-40 probably washes off too
fast?
* Bicycle chain dry lube? This is designed to not let dust/grit stick
to it, but it's more for lubricating metal/metal than glass/salt.
* Some sites at google('optically clear teflon tape') claim they have
tape good to 400 USA degrees, non-yellowing, etc. Might be worth
looking into. Tape would have the added benefit of protecting
against rocks, etc. Anyone tried this?
* Other thoughts?
Also, I'm still debating between the normal-wattage bulbs (55/60, 55)
and the high-wattage (100/80, 100). Any last words of advice
re. blinding drivers, too much close-up light in snowstorms, better
visibility of deer, cops, overheating, bulb life, fish, ...?
Thanks for the wonderfully helpful answers I've seen so far. Time
permitting I'll stick them all in one place on my web page.
Cheers!
-Ben
