Lid wiring, at least on the type 44, is done via one of the lid
supports, both are hollow bent tubing. The wiring on my old 5000
cracked/chaffed where it rubbed on the tube end, and I had to tape it
up. Later type 44's, as evidenced by my 200q20v, came with a rubber
grommet of sorts.

You might have a similar problem on your hands- find where the wiring
goes to the lid and check for cracked/broken/chaffed wiring.
