front shock insert R&R info

  Listers,

  I'm going to be replacing the front inserts in my 90
200tqa cause it's just to cold in the North East to
rip the whole thing out,
so I was wondering if a pipe wrench will still work to
remove the threaded cap & cover through the spring,
since the car's going to be on the ground?
 Then when it's nicer out I'll take the whole strut
assembly out to do the strut bearing.
 Seems the front driver side shock is frozen, shock
will go down but won't rebound back. I'm hoping that
the Audi Gods will stop messing with me soon it's been
a terible month for my 200.
