Greg, glad to hear you have some resolution, great point about the liability, if he had gone and killed someone in an accident and legally you owned the car you may have been liable, why my Dad made me get my own insurance once I turned 18.
Check out http://www.discountconverter.com, I got a 4kq cat from them for about $125, don't mess with used, you might end up with the same problem you have now, no reason to be on your back more than once underneath the car. I'd have the exh. fixed at a Midas or something, you should be able to get it done for under $300, even a simple repair with a new muffler and rear section would do it.
