Type 44 fender flaring

I have a very nice set of 17" BBS RC wheels that I think will look
great on my brilliant black car. The problem is that my car is a type
44.. :-D
Needless to say, the rear fenders look like a problem area with the
BBS wheels. It doesn't look like much interference, but it'll sure
rub. The wheels are ET35 and have 225/45 tires mounted. I checked
clearance in the front, no problem even at full lock.
Anybody have any experience with "modifying" the rear fenders to
accomodate somewhat bigger wheels? I know I could just find some nice
16" ET40 or something, but I was stupid enough to test-fit the BBS
wheels, and then I was "sold" - it looked *really* good..
