re. factory instrumentation accuracy & mpg

I have a friend who is having a love/hate affair with his WRX.  Lovely
little car (except the transmission), and Dave loves to drive fast and
accelerate fast.  When he drove my car to A-Basin, I put the trip
computer on MPG and told him to keep an eye on it.  His reaction -
"Yeah, I know what you mean.  It's really challenging to keep it below
12".
