Any ideas on how to buff out pits in the windshield so the sunlight
reflection isn't so bad?
Is it possible to do or just replace the glass?

since most mineral deposits will be alkaline in nature, a mild acid such
as vinegar ought to be a good place to start. Be gentle around the
defroster element, of course. (Is vinegar really that mild? I seem to
recall a pH of about 3.0 - might be better just to use new england
rainwater if you can get any)

Let the chemical action work for you and don't fuss with scrubbing too
hard.

Then use every glass cleaner you can get your hands on, in a random
order.
