Well, IME, 2-5mm is too tight and results in all kinds of noises and
problems, for example on many used alternators that I've seen having the belt
that tight causes the bearings to squeal, probably a sure sign the alt. is on
its way out, but, a simple loosening the noise goes away.
I guess for a new belt a little tight doesn't hurt because the belt does have
to "settle", but if you're getting funny noises I'd loosen a bit until it
goes away, then tighten if you feel like you're getting slipping, but that'
pretty rare.
