Well, actually, they do build them better in the newer cars. Cars, being
complex machines, develop problems no matter how well they're designed
and built. Having owned a gamut of Audis old and new, I gotta say that
these sort of problems aren't nearly as endemic on the newer cars.

My S4 had an erratic fuel gauge recently that was fixed by doing an
"adaptation" with the VAG scan tool, no parts needed replacement. Also,
the windshield washer pump sprang a leak and was replaced under warranty.
When I first took delivery of the S4, the nav system was inoperative and
the interior temp sensor aerator fan was buzzy. These were fixed promptly.
Otherwise, my new Audis have been completely fault-free.

My previous A4q, a '96, had a totally problem-free life in my 4.5 years
of ownership except the radio had to be replaced because it was eating
my tapes and had FM reception. I sold that car to a former co-worker
and she has not needed to do anything beyond routine maintenance and
replacement of wear parts. Now she has more than 80K miles on the odo and
the car still looks and drives like new.
