Hood struts (and trunk struts for those cars that have them) are
wear items.  They lose their ability to support the weight over time
and use.  Hence I think it's a poor idea to buy them used.

New ones can be had for relatively reasonable prices from TPC
( http://www.thepartsconnection.com ).
