I haven't done this personally (yet), but I've heard tell that
a good way to have it done right and still save money is to
remove the head yourself, take it to a good machine shop,
and reinstall it yourself. The removal/reinstall isn't rocket
science, but the actual valve job itself requires more skill
and equipment. As to finding a good machine shop locally,
ask around. Go to a drag strip or race track and ask any
of the front runners where they get their engines rebuilt.
Once you find a shop or two, ask if they have experience
with Audis or VWs.
