For those that care:
I measured a subaru STI engine the other day. Minimum required engine bay
width is ~33". At 33" of width one would have to expect the need to remove the
engine to swap spark plugs.
I believe this to be the limiting factor for using this engine in any of the
4kq/90q body styles. I eyeball my 4kq to be something like 26" wide between the
fender walls. Bentley shows the frame rails to be 27.5" (I think) apart. But
does not measure inbetween the fenderwalls.
The Subaru engines use two engine mounts on either side of the oil-pan, that
_do_ look well placed for building 'custom bits' to mount to an Audi body.
The difference in length between the Audi I5 and the Sti engines is INCREDIBLE!
The scooby-roo Sti measures something like 18" long (note pad currently at
home). This would be great for weight distribution, and allows lots of room up
front for rad/intercooler/etc. I suspect.
Eyeballing the engine it looks as though everything would be easily serviceable
in-car, except for the spark plugs and wires.
I think the Audi steering rack placement might be an issue, as would all of the
various bits that hang out in an Audi engine bay. That's all secondary
though...first I need to determine if the engine will fit width wise.
No word yet from Andrew on how tough it is to get the engine to mate to the
Audi tranny.
