a risky adventure.
Brings back memories of being old enough to know better, but also being in a
hurry to get a bonfire going on time for a youth meeting.
Of course, the whole thing might have been a lot less traumatic if I hadn't
dropped the matches prior to lighting the "bomb-fire". Those few seconds
gave the gasoline just enough time to vaporize and spread out into quite a
large area outside of the 4' high bonfire stack.
Thankfully, I was just outside that area (as in 3"), having retained enough
common sense to anticipate the result of throwing the match at the
gasoline-soaked stack of wood.
As fascinating as the resulting pyrotechnics were, the "sonic boom" and
advancing fireball were enough to leave me with a permanent, non-disfiguring
reminder to never do that again.
Of course, having the entire crowd in the church come out to see what had
exploded added to my embarrassment of the moment, sealing the reminder
forever.
