overheating? 89 80 and intake boot

So I got the headliner out (once the front attachments are loose, recline
the front seats all the way back and remove the headliner through the
passenger side front door.)
I finally got to take the car out on more than a 5 minute drive (alternator
belt broke on the real test drive.) The car seems to lack a little power,
and after a few minutes started bucking and jerking on takeoff. When I got
home I noticed some loose tape around the intake boot that goes from the
air meter to the manifold, removed some, and noticed a gaping hole in the
boot. Anyone got a spare good intake boot for a 89 80 4cyl? (Remember this
car was dirt cheap, so far no problem is beyond what I expected.) I
eventually turned around because the bucking was getting too bad (I assume
the tape came loose in the extreme heat and causing the AFM to read lean.
On the overheating, while I was removing the headliner, I let the engine
idle for about 20 minutes (so I could run the AC, it is like 95 degrees
here with 50% humidity.) The temp gauge indicated normal temps (low side
of normal.) As soon as I started to drive down the street, however, the
idiot light in the middle of the dash started blinking. Since the gauge
indicated normal, I just kept on driving. I stopped after about 10 miles
at a convenient gas station, and popped the hood. The upper hose did seem
slightly warm, but the lower hose was what I would consider a normal temp
(remember it's like 95 degrees here.) So the question is, where is the
sensor for the idiot light, and what are the specs for it?
