In the late 80's, Mercedes did a fine job of modular engines for the 124
series. 200, 250 and 300 diesel engines shared everything, the main
differences being that the 200 was a 4-cyl, the 250 was a 5-cyl and the
300 was a 6-cyl engine.
Same thing with Audi/VW, of course. The 1781 cc 4-cyl engine has the
same bore/stroke as the 2144 cc 5-cyl, and the 3562 cc V8. Several other
engines in "our" family share the bore and stroke as well
