The bigger question is... how does a vacuum leak in the door lock mechanism
cause the other symptoms?!?

About 12 years ago, I took a recently purchased 1977 MB 240D to a MB
dealer in York, Pennsylvania. The car's automatic transmission was
slipping during gear changes, when it did shift at all. I was told by
the service writer the 240D needed a factory rebuilt transmission,
costing $3500....about what I had paid for the car.

I decided to get a second opinion!

I took the car to the MB dealer in Reading Pennsylvania. The
conversation with the service writer went like this....

SW:"You say the transmission slips when shifting"

Me:"Yep"

SW:"Any problems with the automatic door locks?"

"Yes, sometimes I cannot lock the LF door"

SW:"Hmmm, any problems with shutting off the motor with the ignition
key?"

"Yeah, sometimes I have to use the emergency stop on the injection pump"

SW:"You have a vacuum leak in the LF door lock"

SW:"It'll cost about $200 to fix the vacuum leak, adjust the
transmission and change fluid and filter"

The bill came to $163 plus tax; the door locks worked, motor shut off
with the key and the car shifted fine.

I never went back to the MB dealer in York.
