Some years ago, after a spate of these accidents, former racing driver Denise
McCluggage wrote a piece on this phenomenon for Autoweek. I thought it was
interesting that she said inappropriate braking is often a sign that a person
needs to hang up his/her car keys. People's ability to process information
deteriorates--as Ms. McCluggage put it, they're braking to stop the world, not
the car.
