How do you get more $ from insurer for totaled vehicle? (NAC)

What I did:

Write ass detailed a letter as possible explaining all the reasons that the
$$ they're offering is low, emphasizing your inability to replace the car
you lost w/ the $$ they want to give you. Include info in mods, accessories
and condition of your car to support this argument.

After I faxed the letter, I called and talked to the adjuster. She, of
course, didn't agree with my asessment, but I was persistent on the point
that I was unable to replace my car with one of equal value and quality etc
etc. I was able to get a substantial increase in their offer, but not up to
the total amount I was asking for. Then, the ace-in-the-hole I did not know
about...

Even though I was eligable for a rental car when my car was totalled, I
didn't get one, as I had several cars. She sugested that to bridge the
difference she could pay me the rental car allowance on top of the
settlement.

Bottom line:

original offer: $1400 (super low-ball)
what I countered with: $4100
re-negotiated offer: $2520
rental car $ : 840

Total check I got in the end: $3360

(no this wasn't an Audi for those who are curious).

When my A4 was totalled, I called my insurance company
and discussed with them the blue book value of the
car, plus other options that came with the car that
would increase it's value.
They added on another 900 bucks, for sport steering
wheel, cold weather package, CD changer.
