I agree with Jim, be smart about cutting the metal, but once you decide to "cut it right", then you can really start making some progress. In a 4kq its quite challenging to do anything as long as all that crappy core support metal is in the way, once you redo all that you can open up all kinds of room in there.
Once I got all the "problem metal" out of the way in my car I haven't had to cut anything since.
I don't like "WRX" style IC's, they just pick up heat, there is plenty of room up front where an IC really belongs.
