A $20 savings to use the wrong thing, eh?  Somehow I don't see the
"economy" there.  Maybe it will work fine, but what if there is
something about the synthetic that is necessary to the transmission
working properly?

Doesn't seem like a good place to experiment - messy, hard to change,
expensive if it causes a problem.  Remember that at the going competent
mechanic rates, you save practically that much when you change your
spark plugs yourself.  I'd say, use the "good" fluids, the price
difference isn't worth saving.
