The electrical part of the ignition switch is what fails.
The new switch costs about $25-$30, and it takes a home mechanic
about 2.5 hours to install.  It helps to have really small fingers
and a lot of dexterity.  I've done it twice.  The switch of the
manual tranny car was easier to replace.
