and this person was running a timing belt cover??????
I can't see how any accessory belt could get sucked under the t-belt
with the cover in place...

I've seen conversions where people leave the cover off either because
they are running timing pins or just because they feel like it. Seems
dangerous to me just for this reason.

--------------------------------------------
Cover was in place, both top and bottom... Power steering belt was replaced at Lime Rock a month earlier; same belt failed again (a Gates belt).

Belt shredded, and a thin end looks like it must have hit the crank pulley right at the belt cover, and it got twisted around and pulled in.

I checked time, even sneaked the timing belt off, reset cam timing to crank, then snuck the belt back on, but no compression... timing belt didn't appear to be damaged, it just got a piece of belt under it, blocking teeth from sprocket, and the belt stopped turning with the crank for a bit, leaving valves ready to hit pistons...
