ignition switch

If it's just the start portion of the switch that's causing problems (i.e.
running fine in 'ON') then you can install a push button switch for the
starter portion in the cardboard portion of the footwell liner just above
your knees, I placed mine in the vertical portion right next to the
switch. I used a fancy chrome one from the local parts store in my former
86 CGT , and just spliced it into the wires coming from the switch. When I
sold the car the next owner thought it was stock. I did this because
taking the mechanism to get at the switch looked too difficult to
disassemble at the time.
My current 89 80 also has a bad ignition switch, and this one looks like
even more of a PITA to take apart. The recycling facility I bought the car
from just got a different switch and bolted it under the dash (they removed
the very same panel I would have stuck a push switch into, so when I do
repair this switch (as I intend to do, I tested it and it's entirely bad, I
plugged it back in and all kinds of light started blinking and the car
wouldn't start.) I can put the panel back on and everything will look
normal. Interesting driving the car, it has two ignition switches, the
regular one which merely locks the column, and the hidden one under the
dash that starts the car.
