1996 A4 Quattro Evaporator

It looks as if my refrigerant leak problem is getting
worse, but no dye shows up in the engine
compartment, so the evaporator may have to be
changed. I'm being quoted $1500 for labor by a
couple of independent shops and told by two others
that they won't do it. Is that estimate reasonable?
I would appreciate a recommendation which
available reference is best to find how to do it if I
decide to try it myself. Haynes? Factory CD?
