HELP FOR A NEWB: Why won't the @$*$ing thing start?? (5000S)

I posted earlier, and checked out things that people suggested (major hoses,
oil cap) and I am still unable to start the engine on my Audi 5000S. After
smelling the gas, I drained the fuel tank and it came out nasty. Reconnected
everything, checked all lines and they are tight.  The engine will crank,
but it won't "catch" i.e. start turning on its own. I removed the ISV and
cleaned it out w/ carb cleaner (idle is all over the place, as is accel.)
and then placed it. After I did this was when this starting problem started.
The battery is full, and new gas is in the lines. Could it be a plug in the
fuel delivery system somewhere?
