roof rack

For a few years I had a Yakima for bikes/skis. The bike-on-the-roof was
cumbersome, so I usually just took the wheels off and placed it in the ample
trunk. I bought my rack used from the local recycler; all the fixin's for
around $100.

I got rid of it after 3 years b/c it was quite old, and the rubber feet on
the towers were separating. But I would definitely not worry so much about
brand (I think Yakima/Thule are of similar quality) and check out
ebay/recycler/trader/classifieds for used. Also I've read that the OEM racks
from Audi/VAG are quite beefy--more so in fact b/c they have to maintain
stability at autobahn speeds as to prevent 'bike ballast removal'. $$$y
though.

PS: my car is a '87 5kcstq.

Tangent: am I the only freak who thinks certain cars (Audis, ubaruS, aabS,
etc.) look better with a rack on top, holding a snowboard, surfboard,
whatever? [SUV in red circle and slash drawn accross it]
