4k rear door handle

Hey all,

I took apart the drivers rear door on my 4kq today to try and fix the
"door doesn't open from the outside" problem. I have read several
threads on the subject each talking about rods and plastic connectors
etc, but none of those seem to describe what I have as my problem. I
see no connecting parts between the exterior door handle and the
actual mechanism. After scraping the bottom of the door, I found a
cast metal piece, Maybe 1.5 inches in the shape of an L. I't looks
like its supposed to pivot at the angle and push on something, but I
can't figure out how it would fit onto handle, and its not long
enough to reach down to the release. I looked at the door handle
mechanism which seems to be all metal, it looks as though a piece
(that held the "L" piece?) has broken. I would appreciate advice as
to what parts I should be looking for, how the mechanism works, and
whether or not I need a new handle to get the door functional again.
