Huw,
I am so glad you finally have a question. Sorry I did not notice it
sooner. I have been a Rockford Fosgate guy since I bought my first gen head
unit a few years ago, but it skimped on features and a new unit has just
caught my eye. My friend just bought a Panasonic with all of the features
you describe and then some (including remote) for $200 from Panasonic, but
it may be a bit busy. The model I have linked I saw at Circuit City for
$300. This one have a "ghost" faceplate that is either going to be
something you like or not. You can change the color, but what really
impressed me was its simplicity and how right at home it would look in my
87TQ avant. I think under $500 all of the units are going to have built in
amps(amp delete is a very high end thing, probably more for space and the
thing making enough heat on its own), but if you are running external amps
they will never turn on anyhow. I really like www.crutchfield.com as a
resource, it helps to get a feel for the different features. Also I have
found for anyone who has not actually ordered from them you will surely be
impressed. They typically include installation kits and hanresses that
would otherwise cost you $50 or more. They also include full instructions,
since I am sure you are confused as to how to get into the dash of your car,
LOL.
Hope this helps and I am not too late

Since I have almost all the parts I need to finally set up a decent
stereo in my 89 90Q (speakers, amplifier, door pockets, 'new'
interior...) I guess it is time to find a head unit I like.
I figure many of you have gone through a similar search so I might save
time by asking for results before I look.
Here is what I want:
A CD player (& changer controller) or cassette player w/changer
controller with
- orange/red illumination (that narrows the field!)
- front and rear line outputs; sub not necessary but harmless if it does
not affect the mains.
- I prefer not to have built in amplifiers, they waste money and make
too much heat
- a nice, simple ergonomic design (I'm getting too old to learn all
those buttons!)
- I would prefer to spend under $500 or so, incuding a CD changer, if at
all possible
- DVD/MP3/Windoze compatibility not necessary, see age comment above.
I've been driving around with the same Duke Ellington CD in my current
player for about 8 months now...
So if any of you folks with your finger on the pulse of the market know
of a unit that would make me happy, please let me know.
Thanks!
PS it should also (!) sound good.
