Interesting. What I notice every year during our annual track day (on a
very small, tight track- very much like an auto-x) is that every
five-cylinder Audi comes off the track ticking and rattling like mad. Every
Audi, except for the solid lifter models.

Oil starvation to the hydraulic lifters?
