There is no 'best way'- there's only the legal and responsible way.
R12 is an ozone-destroying chemical(which is why it isn't made
anymore, so on so forth), and it MUST be recovered by an A/C tech.
I'm not your mother, but let's be clear about this, because some
listers take a rather cavalier attitude towards the environment(such
as thinking hydraulic leaks are ok. "Just keep topping it off!")
We are not talking about something fairly harmless like driving
with gutted catalytic converters and slipping the guy at the
emissions station a little side money. R12 is far from harmless-
every ounce destroys enormous amounts of ozone. Bob the Resident
Chemist will undoubtedly step up and correct me if I'm wrong here,
but when struck by UV light(in the upper atmosphere), the CFC breaks
apart leaving a free chlorine atom, which then goes around breaking
ozone(O3) into O2- in a chain reaction that can continue almost
indefinitely assuming the chlorine atom doesn't react with anything
else.
