V8 : Bad leak from power steering/brakes system

Pump is the same as used on '97 5k cars. It's just that it has its own
enclosing bracket because of the engine configuration.

My V8's A/C compressor got wet with hydraulic oil from the supply hose to
the pump leaking at the reservoir. The pinch-on hose clamp ceases to seal
the hose to the reservoir nipple when the hose material ages and shrinks.

However, if it IS the pump itself leaking, I think you can check that by
putting it up on ramps/stands/hoist, removing the belly cover and watching
the bottom of the pump from below while the engine runs. A year ago, the
pump on our V8 started leaking at its center seam, and it emptied the
reservoir in just a few miles of driving.

You remove the pump by taking off the serpentine belt and the pulley,
disconnecting the hoses and taking off the same bolts at the back of the
pump that appear on other Audi models. You can slide it forward and out of
the V8 bracket after moving aside the electric fan, which is mounted with
three bolts, I think. You don't have to disconnect the fan, just lay it
aside. A strap wrench will allow you to loosen the bolts holding the
pulley to the pump shaft flange. Don't lose the thin shims between the
flange and pulley. They help locate the pulley for proper alignment with
the serpentine belt.
