The '84-87 uses CIS-E does not use the warmup regulator - it uses a
differential pressure regulator.  It is generally more reliable, but
some of the things I mentioned can cause similar symptoms.

His problems sounds like the warm-up regulator has gone south. A friend
of mine had the exact same symptoms on his '83 MB 280SE (which uses a
similar Bosch regulator) and he needed to replace that regulator to get
his car running nicely again. It sits on the left side of the engine
block
