Almost certainly a failing brake master cylinder, Doyt.  The darn thing
sits where all the engine bay heat goes.

I'm uncertain about "shorten the MC rod", but I CAN tell you that fiddling
with the actuator rod in the cabin probably won't fix what's going on with
the MC.  That rod goes to the brake booster, which  pushes on the MC's
actuator rod at the point the MC mounts to the booster.  If you take the MC
off the booster, there is a rod that sticks out of the back of the MC that
the booster pushes on.  I presume  shortening the rod refers to the one
sticking out of the MC.  I doubt the effectiveness of this modification.
