Typ 89 Oil temp gauge

First thing I would check is the sender wire. The sender is on the oil
filter side of the engine, at the bottom, front of the engine. It has a
single phillips style screw in the top that secures the wire for the
gauge. This wire can break off from its ring terminal and cause all sorts
of weirdness. You will see the wire running along the top of the oil pan,
it is supposed to be secured by several little metal clips that grab onto
the pan lip itself.
