Amidst all the shouting and carrying on about O2 sensors, I simply went to
http://www.oxygensensors.com and bought a generic three-wire unit with
6-inch wire leads for $40. It's made by Walker, and the expected service
life is stated at 100K miles. There was another unit for the car at $66.00
with all the wiring included, but why spend another $26 for wires that I can
splice myownself??
I pulled the old one off my 1990 200, cut the wires in the old harness and
spliced the wires from the generic sensor into the old wires as per the
instructions, then installed the new sensor. (Note: to do this just right,
each wire cut should be staggered from the next by about 1/2" so they don't
stack on top of each other. Keeps the wiring harness much smaller.)
Car runs fine, starts fine. Why all the fuss, and why are people convinced
they need to pay $100 or more for an O2 sensor?????
This ol' shade-tree mechanic sez: "Tain't so, McGee."
