5TQ Stalling

On my '88 5kcstq, when I just bought it out of state and was driving it with my then-girlfriend, it was doing something just like this. I found it quite frustrating. Eventually, after driving it 400 miles home without a problem (thank God!), it died completely and wouldn't restart.
After replacing the fuel pump needlessly, searching for vacuum leaks, and finally breaking down and paying a mechanic some bucks to diagnose and fix that and other problems, it went away.
Supposedly the culprit was the fuel pump relay, and the connections underneath the fuse box.
I can't explain the relationship with deceleration, but there you go.

I have checked the decel valve and tried running the car with the decel
valve disconnected (electrically). It still stalls. Idle speed is 750 rpm.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks
