strut is out!

Hey everyone,

Well, I finally yanked the strut out today. Had to construct a somewhat
elaborate lever mechanism and apply leverage to a pipe i fit down the hole
over the strut shaft. That sucker was in there tight! It appears that the
lower half of the strut was coated with a petroleum-like jelly which had
hardened over time and formed an adhesive to the strut housing. There was
absolutely no rust! Was this jelly-like stuff applied from the factory? The
other strut required far less prying and slid out a lot easier so I don't
know. The strut that wouldnt come out, I tried heating it, hammering it,
prying it out with a crowbar near the middle by the thread but nothing
worked. Thanks to everyone who replied with very helpful info; you guys
confirmed my nagging suspicion that it was just stuck in there. The car
rides fantastically btw, thanks to four bilstein stossdampfers.
