Have you considered getting a random-orbital buffer?  It cuts the
time down to nothing, is perfectly safe to use(it's nearly impossible
to damage the paint with a low-speed RO), and you'll wonder what you
ever did without one.  Porter Cable makes an extremely popular unit,
and it's available from tool shops for about $110-120(same unit as
listed in Griots, for almost twice the price.)  It was the best money
I ever spent.

I use it in combination with Pinnacle Paintwork cleaner, which I've
used for several years now and have been very happy with; I've used
it with good success on VW, Audi, Porsche, and Volvo paintwork; I've
discovered recently that I can leave the foam pad very damp w/water
and spray a little water onto the panel for some great results, lets
you spend more time with the buffer going over the panel before the
pad starts to dry out.  PPC's label says it is non-abrasive, but I
find it still does a great job on removing all sorts of dirt.  I then
apply a good hard wax by hand(remove it by hand as well.)

Working with a friend I was able to do a black VW New Beetle in about
an hour, top to bottom.  It had been covered in very fine spiderweb
marks from poor washing techniques(this is where most defects come
from!) and the paint was pretty dirty, but came out looking superb.
Would have gone faster except I stopped to clean the pad twice, and
we ran out of clean/dry towels.
