Transmission mounts and/or motor mounts would be my guess. The trash-can of
a car I just bought (I'm not bitter...another story) did that when I got it,
and it was the transmission mounts.

Subject: 87 5KTQ clunking\rubbing noise
There is a clunking noise sounds like from under the engine that happens
mostly and only when in gear. It doesn't only seem to happen on turns
either. Sometimes it sounds like something is rubbing. If I take it out of
gear and coast I don't hear it. Although sometimes on a bump I hear
something similar.
The front ball joints seem OK. There is some movement up and down in the
rear tires, but the noise doesn't seem to be coming from the rear. I can
feel it in the floor. Another thing is that the exhaust hanger behind the
cat is not there, so there is some play there.
I hope to do some more looking today, just looking for anybody's input.
Thanks for any help
Ben
