Clutch problem found on 83 CGTt Advice??

Hey,

Got the motor out just a little bit ago,  while the clutch is badly glazed,
that wasn't the real problem.  It tore up the pilot bearing!!

I am not sure if I am going to be able to find one, at least not today..
What would cause it to do that?

What do you think about just not putting one back in?  My friends Talon
doesn't have a bushing or bearing at all,  do you really think it is
necessary for the Audi??  Not having it in there would pretty much keep that
from ever happening again.
