How do you tell if an H2O pump is failing? (NAC)

If the water pump were functional and thermostat were stuck closed, I would
expect there to be lots of heat available to the heater core, contrary to
symptom #1, as the heater core is normally on the "inside" of the
thermostat-controlled coolant circuit. Sounds like dead water pump to me,
FWIW.
