Strage Air/Fuel Gauge Readings...

Hey all,
Installed an Auto Meter Air/Fuel Mixture gauge in the 90q this weekend.
Installed as one more place to look if it starts to run funny...well, that and
it was a christmas present so I might as well USE it!
Stock 1989 NG 10v engine.
Wired it up to the actual O2 sensor wiring, as opposed to right before the ECU
that I know is popular.
Heres what I get:
1) When just cruising it bounces between 'half-lean' and all the stoich LED's.
I know bouncing is normal, but EVERY gauge I've ever seen bounces between full
lean and full rich.
2) Under WOT I get maximum 2 LED's rich. Haven't seen anything more.
Now, this tells me one of three things:
1) Gauge not working/not wired properly.
2) Fuel mixture is set too lean
3) I have the most accurate Audi ECU ever created!?!
Perhaps this explains my 10L/100km mileage during these winter months!?!
I should note I've never experienced any pinging or anything else that would
suggest a problem...well, besides my slight miss occasionally when the engine
gets really wet, which I've always attributed to moisture getting in somewhere.
Am I okay? Or do I need to do a full bentley-procedure mixture check?
