Dave,

I've done the 9007 conversion. Don't recall the website I used, but,
you CAN modify the lights such that you can use either type of
bulb. You will need a grinding tool, such as a Dremel and grind
out BOTH lower tabs in the bulb opening. Then swap the ground
and low beam wires on the connector and you're done with the
physical part of the mod. You will need to SEVERELY aim the
headlight down so that you don't blind people. Aim as per the
typical H4 guidelines, although the "cut-off" is not nearly as
obvious.

If you really don't want to mod the lamps (really, it's interchangeable,
the top tab still aligns the bulbs), you can use the dremel and
a milling tip, set to a low speed (so you don't melt the plastic)
and grind the lower two slots wide enought on the 9007 bulbs
so that they'll slip into the stock 9004 opening. To give you some
idea of what you are grinding, the tab locations on 9007 bulbs
are the exact mirror image to the tab locations on a 9004.

HTH!

BTW - whether or not you will get a better light pattern is a bit
hit of miss. It DOES work for type 44 turbo lights, don't know if
there is the same type of "improvement" for aero type 85. I guess
you can tell us if it works for them. Never got the chance to check
on A2 VW lights, switched to Euro's before 9007's were ever
developed.
