Lifters do get noisier as they age. You can replace them, usually
not necessary. A proper oil filter with a drainback valve will help,
as will proper weight oil.
My old '90 90Q20V benefitted greatly from a can of Marvel Mystery Oil
in the crankcase with each oil change.
